Starting a new job or getting a promotion in Tanzania is
exciting, but the "Gross Salary" on your contract isn't what ends up
in your pocket. To plan your finances effectively, you must understand how much
the government takes through PAYE (Pay As You Earn) and what goes into
your NSSF (National Social Security Fund) account.
In this guide, we break down the exact steps to calculate
your net salary (Take-Home Pay) using the 2026 tax regulations.
1. The Deductions Breakdown
There are two primary statutory deductions for every
employee in the private sector in Tanzania:
- NSSF
(Social Security): This is your retirement savings. Usually, the total
contribution is 20% of your gross salary. However, the law allows the
employer to deduct up to 10% from the employee, while the employer
covers the other 10%.
- PAYE
(Income Tax): This is the tax paid to the Tanzania Revenue
Authority (TRA). It is calculated on your "Taxable
Income"—which is your Gross Salary minus your NSSF
contribution.
2. Step-by-Step Calculation Example
Let’s assume your Gross Salary is TZS 1,500,000.
Step A: Calculate NSSF (10%)
$$1,500,000 \times 10\% = 150,000$$
Your NSSF Deduction: TZS 150,000
Step B: Find Taxable Income
Taxable Income = Gross Salary - NSSF
$$1,500,000 - 150,000 = 1,350,000$$
Your Taxable Income: TZS 1,350,000
Step C: Calculate PAYE (Using 2026 TRA Brackets)
Based on the 2026 TRA Resident Individual rates, the tax for
TZS 1,350,000 is calculated as follows:
- The
first 270,000 is 0% (Tax-Free).
- The
amount between 1,000,000 and above is taxed at 30%.
- According
to the TRA simplified table, for any amount above 1,000,000, the tax is TZS
128,000 + 30% of the excess over 1,000,000.
Calculation:
- Excess
over 1,000,000: 1,350,000 - 1,000,000 = 350,000
- 30% of
Excess: 350,000 \times 0.30 = 105,000
- Total
PAYE: 128,000 + 105,000 = 233,000
Your PAYE Tax: TZS 233,000
3. Final Take-Home Pay
To get your final net salary, subtract all deductions from
your Gross Salary:
- Gross
Salary: TZS 1,500,000
- NSSF:
TZS 150,000
- PAYE:
TZS 233,000
- Take-Home
Pay: TZS 1,117,000
